From the FCE Ultra FAQ: Quote:Why does Super Mario Bros. start off on level 0?
This happens if you're using a hacked copy of the Super Mario Bros. ROM image. The hacked version is reading from uninitialized RAM, apparently to get the starting level number. This bad copy of SMB was likely extracted from a bootleg multicart, which would have had a menu run before the game started, initializing RAM and setting the starting level. I have way too many roms to list. I have emulators for both NES and SNES, with the NES collection near completion, and my SNES collection just now re-building (had to redo my comp, so I lost all my roms). Also, I run MAME, so I have a ton of arcade roms. I'm not at home right now, so I couldn't really begin to list any roms I may own.
