Hey folks... Recently I got a PC-Engine DUO, japanese, and started downloading ISOs, hunting scans, game manuals, articles game covers and etc. This is really my first time with PCEngine/TG16, years ago I just read about them in import magazines... and for my shock I found this out! It's a true crime what they did, in my opinion! Of course, we must remember that this happened years ago, the world was other, etc etc... But it's a crime in any way! Cospefogo. Comparisons - Japanese original cover first, followed by the US version.

Wow, Sidearms got a wierd cover in the States.
While I've never seen the PC Engine version, I know that the home computer conversions used the same art as the Japanese game. I recognise the art from the adverts for the game from back in the day.
As for Theorons Quest, I believe the stateside art is actually the original cover, since Dungeon Master was a western developed game and that's the cover of Dungeon Master.

I think our j j & jeff kicked the other ones ass, though. Not a crime, just what they think would appeal more to the US people. Though i have to say that first US bomberman cover is pretty damned gay.

I see your point. Most US cover arts look like they belong in those nursery rhyme books for little kids. No wonder it sold better in Japan! The PC Engine looks cooler than the TG16 too.

This cover actually looks more "American" than the actually American one. It seems that Japan favors the more comical anime style covers. It works well for some games ('Splatterhouse' is NOT one of them). I definitely prefer American "Bonk" (The Japan image makes me cringe), and maybe even American "Bomber Man" (only because the Japanese version looks like it was drawn with magic marker by a 3rd grader). I also noticed that a lot of the hand drawn artwork for most of the NEC titles look like they were done with colored pencil or something. They definitely look unique compared to the professional coloring we've seen from games on other systems throughout the years. Interesting stuff. I approve. http://www.playthenes.com

Some of those are really weird... :)
The first US Bomberman is hilarious. :D
In some few cases, I like the US cover more.

And in Fantasy Zone's case, I don't think there's much to tell them apart.
I suspect much of it comes back to the the fact 8-bit gaming was for kids, predominantly. I mean, generally speaking, we usually get more or less the same cover art as Japan these days.
Actually, probably the most interesting modern system to look at for international box-art would be the X-box, since it's primarily a western system, in japan. I wonder if they did anything to the box art to try and sell the games?

Is it just me or is the Valis 3 US cover make the chick look like a shaved ape? I kind of like most of the Jap covers more, it seems that the US hired horrible cover artist (couldn't they figure it into their budget?). Plus the US bomberman guy looks nothing like the cute bomerman I came to love. http://www.myspace.com/jennikisaI need friends.... I had to nix Tom. He wasn't really my friend. His smile "mocked" me.

I prefer the jap. covers. I suppose that it's all to do with cutural differences and what not.
