I've harped over this game for sometime. Snake's Revenge was so shotty compared to what Hideo Kojima developed for the MSX in Japan. Since it was never ported over here, emulation is the only way to experience this fantastic game. I've come up with some links for everyone to try out, if they wish. This game is definately worth the sit down in front of a computer!

Emulators:

This is definately for Windows, but I'm not sure about Mac,
http://rom-world.com/file_emu.php?id=12

Here is a page with MSX emulators for Mac, but I don't think fMSX is free anymore. There are others listed to try, though.
http://emulation.net/msx/

You can find the English translation of the game, AND the Japanese version here (along with some other really good Konami games). The original CastleVania is here, too, but doesn't run well.
http://dynamo.geol.msu.ru/msx/romlist.htm

There is a huge HTML manual here that you may need for a couple of spots in the game.
http://www.msxnet.org/gtinter/Operate.htm

Hopefully anyone who hasn't played this will give it a go... it's highly enjoyable!

The best thing about this ROM is that it's perfectly legal. Of course, you want to make sure to find the ROM named "solide12" for the English translated version.

I tried playing through it with DreamMSX and really far. Then the game messed up right when I got to *SPOILER* the part where the Metal Gear walks onto the screen.

Oh well. It was a great game for what I played of it. Maybe I'll try the PC emulator with it.

A definite MUST PLAY for all Metal Gear fans, and a good lead-in for the story in Metal Gear Solid.

Yeah, I agree. They really do need to bring this game over. It's MUCH better than our "sequel," and it's in the actual timeline of Metal Gear.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Snake didn't find out about (and it wasn't supposed to be revealed) the Big Boss thing until MGS. It's been awhile since I played either of the two, but I'm pretty sure. I think it's one of those things that Hideo Kojima came up with for the next game.

How about that battle with Metal Gear, eh? Pretty cool to fight a moving Metal Gear in this one!

I totally understand that! I had played MGS before I even heard about Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. So when I read the Previous Stories section (I think that's what it's called) on MGS, I was like, "Solid Snake fought Grey Fox in a minefield... in .... where... Zanzibar Land?" I was SO confused! I figured they had just twisted the story from Snake's Revenge or something. I wasn't sure. Ha! Now that I've been through it, it all makes sense. Darn Snake's Revenge!

Press both the "M" and "N" keys.
Or whichever ones are "punch" and "shoot".

I use 'Paint Shop Pro'. It's the poor man's 'Photoshop', but is suprisingly robust.
You can get a free trial at http://www.jasc.com

You can also get 'Animation Shop' from them from doing animated GIF's, but I use CoffeeCup GIF Animator. Very simple program that gets the job done.

See my amazing flashy dashy!

So.... who's excited that this is coming out in North America? *raises hand enthusiastically*

We'll finally get a direct translation. It should be interesting to see the translation on the web as opposed to the official release. Thoughts?

It's going to be on the PS2, on the re-release/add-on of MGS3 known as Subsistence. It's supposed to have the MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on the disc(s). I'm not sure if they are unlockables, but I would almost think they would be (see also: Ninja GaiDen for XBox). I'm SO excited about this, I could wet myself :P I can never remember the release date for it, so I keep checking my local gaming stores for a release. For a quick run-down of everything that will be on Subsistence, check this link out:

Here's a really good site about the English development of 'Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake'.
http://www.msxnet.org/gtinter/mgear2us.htm
This is about the "fan's translation" and not the "official release".

I just noticed the ROM for the MSX game is no longer available from the above links. You can try here as well.

As for playing the game as part of 'Metal Gear Solid: Subsistance', only if they release an XBox version (it's the only current gen console I got).

This looks pretty sweet, Mostly I play all my old NES games off my Xbox, I wonder if it works as well.
I have been dying to play this game since beating the old Metal gear ages ago, I still remember playing Metal gear back in 88 or 89 after school, lol
Also I could never beat snakes rev. as the game would always freeze when you get to that part where you are above a orange( maybe it was red) skycart or something that is like that.

If you install the BlueMSXbox emulator, playing the original 'Metal Gear' and 'Metal Gear 2' games is an absolute joy.

I often wonder how my life would be different if I would've played through and beaten 'Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake' during its original release year (as opposed to just recently). It surely would have made playing 'Metal Gear Solid' for the first time an even better experience.
