I'm constantly amazed by the number of people that still refer to videogame controllers with the outdated terms "joystick" or worse, "paddle". I occasionally even catch myself using the term "gamepad", but normally when referring to USB controllers. Browsing some NES auctions last week, I discovered one I've never heard before: "handle".

Is this a regional thing like the difference between "soda" and "pop", or is this just people that clearly don't know any better?

Generally it's "Controller" for me, though sometimes I say "pad" or if it's an arcade stick, it's "stick"

everyone I know usually goes wth the standard "Controller" too.

I think I've heard "handle" before... for me, though, a joystick is a joystick, and anything else is a controller.

Well, I usually call mine "fjernkontroller", or just "kontroller". In English I would just call them controllers. No more, no less.

Actually, not all was thinking. Some was plotting, some was planning, and finally the explaining of my plan which I plotted after I thought of it.

i call it a "controller" and a joystick is a "joystick"

one thing i can't stand though, is when people call a tv remote either a "clicker" or "channel changer" or i can't think of anymore, but i've heard some pretty wacky ones. it's a "remote" damn it! :x

Controller.

Some people also say "joypad" to them in allusion to "joystick".

I call them controllers. Unless I'm playing my Atari 2600, then it's a joystick and paddle (because that's what they are).

I need friends.... I had to nix Tom. He wasn't really my friend. His smile "mocked" me.

That annoys me too. Especially "clicker"

I've always reffered to them as "a controller" or "controllers" maybe I have called them a "pad" once or twice.

I periodically will call the remote a clicker. Partially because that's what my family always called it. And partially because it bugs the hell out of one of my friends.

Yeah, to me, that is the only correct usage of "paddle": The pong PADDLES for the Atari. Is that where that originates from? How did paddle stick around for so long?

I just call it "the controller". Never felt the need to call it anything different.

Controller. Or maybe pad. Or joystick if, you know, it actually is a joystick.
