do I have to die to save my game or is there another way to save game? I know it's a stupid question, I'm playing through the game again right now and can't remember if that was the only way to save

I'm pretty sure there's a way to do it. I almost think it uses the second controller, but it's been awhile since I've played it. It also might still count as a tally (as in, a number higher like you did die)... not sure though. Well wait... this almost like an edit but I didn't submit first haha. Anyway, I checked GameFAQs. Yeah, pause the game and press Up+A on controller 2. There you can save, and it DOESN'T count it as if you died. I tested it on my cart also to be sure.

Can't you just press select or something? I coulda swore there was a way to do it easily... and I didn't think it counted against your death count. By the way Roth, that was a pretty funny post. :lol:

No, sorry, but you can't just press Select to save. Select is the pause button. There's really just the method Roth mentioned. If you want to check it yourself, you can read the manual here: www.nesfiles.com/NES/Zelda/Zelda.pdf

Thanks Roth, I knew there was something. much better than killing myself to save my game all the time (adding death tolls)

The original Zelda manual won't tell you what you need to know...
Make sure you have both controllers hooked up, go into your inventory screen with your first controller, and while this screen is up, press up + A button on the second controller. That'll bring you to the continue/save menu.
Also, if you keep using this method, if you never die, you'll finish the game with the counter saying you played it 0 times!
It's either this method or grab an emulator and ROM and use save states... :P

thanks, it works perfect.
ya I could use save states with an emulator, but there's nothing like playing the real thing, having the real cart, original controller, and top loading nes. I find it so much better than playing a rom.

I know what you mean there. Mostly, I use ROMS for the carts I don't have, and my computers actually have better sound than my TV sets.
Other than that, yeah, nothing beats the NES console & game paks!

I find it so much better than playing a rom. I actually can't do that, as I need to replace the battery in my LoZ cart :/ I had to sit through the game in one day to get my pic of conquering it. I really need to get some batteries. I'm sure I have another cart that has a battery not working. Have fun with that Zelda!
