Nintendo to me is like a cherished family pet that's taken to crapping all over the carpet. A couple of cute tricks like the GBA and DS keep you from kicking it out the house. I hesitate to say it, as Nintendo's last two console systems were really disappointing. But the Wii actually looks like it has the right mix to make Nintendo to not look like a joke anymore. I just hope they finally start releasing games adults would enjoy playing. Call of Duty and Red Steel is a step in the right direction..

I can see where he's coming from, though. Personally, I'm positive that the "Wiimote", will get past the gimmicky stage, something which is far less of a sure thing for Sony's "Sixaxis".

Yeah, I have to say it was. Other than a small handful of games like Zelda OoT, MM, 007 and Pokemon can you name a game that was worth playing for more than 5 mins? Now the SNES on the other hand had TONS of awesome games like Final Fantasy 2, 3 and MQ, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Paladin's Quest, F Zero and Secret of Evermore just to name a few off the top of my mind.

The Gamecube sucked the gay out of Liberace's anus. Other than the Zelda games, Metal Gear and the GBA attachment, I've never seen a more neglected system.

Sega Dreamcast also suffered from lack of games but the hits that it did have totally made it forgivable. Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Grandia II, Zombie's Revenge and Soul Calibur were some of the best games IMO of this decade. LOL I still cry to this day over Sega's decision to pull out of the console business.

I just hope Nintendo remembers this time around that their potential players include people that are over the age of 8. Cause the Wii has the potential to be awesome.

Mario Golf, Kart, and Tennis, Banjo Kazzoie and Tooie, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Road Rash 64, and a whole lot more were more than just little gimmicky games.

Ok I'll give you Mario Kart. Me and my stepson spent many an afternoon fighting it out for battle mode supremacy. Diddy Kong racing was cool maybe if you are 5 along with Banjo. Heck, my son is 5 and even he thinks Diddy Kong Racing sucks. Road Rage 64 was decent at best. I did forgot to mention Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat III but they technically don't count as it was released on other systems. I was more along talking about games that were fun for teenagers and adults.

You still gotta admit the NES and SNES had waaaaaaay more hits than the N64 even had games.
Don't get me wrong I do love my N64. It just did not live up to 1/1000ths of the hype Nintendo made it out to be.

I can totally justify the N64 with one word. Anyone who debates this single word justification just doesn't like video games for fun reasons, they only play because they want blood and guts.

That word is "Rare"

You've got:

Diddy Kong Racing
Goldeneye
Blast Corps
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Perfect Dark
Jet Force Gemini
Donkey Kong 64

And of course the non-Rare greats:

Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Super Mario 64
Excitebike 64
Mario Kart 64
Mario Party 1-3
Mischief Makers
Mystical Ninja
Paper Mario
Turok
Turok 2

(not a complete list, just the ones that are bursting with so much awesome that you need to own the console for these games alone. To the best of my knowledge, all listed games are exclusives.)

For the record, I was 10-16 during the life of the N64, and I played and greatly enjoyed most of those games. Diddy Kong Racing probably being one of the more enjoyable on the list. There's nothing wrong with having fun without blowing someone's head apart.

Personally, I have a hard time coming up with that many great games for the SNES. people love it for the RPGs, which are all typical Square crap, they're all the same freakin' game. Sure, it had Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country, and... uhh... half a dozen generic RPGs.

I think people just rip on the N64 because it COULD have been a lot better. Nintendo lost a lot of third parties because of the choice to stick with cartridges.

The Cube has a small handful of greats, but really nothing worth buying the console for. it's by far the worst Nintendo console to date. I'm hoping the Wii doesn't suffer the same fate.

Square is crap now. But as a kid when I wanted a RPG all you had to do was look to Square. The last good games they put out was Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy 7-9. Final Fantasy X was just bearable. I haven't picked up a FF game since.. Well other than the ones they released for GBA. Even if you didn't count Square's games you have for the SNES:

Breath of Fire I and II
Jurassic Park
Street Fighter 2 turbo
Final Fight
Zelda Link to the Past
Contra
Super Castlevania
Actraiser 1-2
Ogre Battle
NBA Jam
Double Dragon 3
Desert Strike
Urban Strike
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario Allstars
Super Metroid
World Heroes 1-2
Harvest Moon
Super Punchout
Starfox
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy

etc etc etc

It's not that I'm saying N64 didn't have any games... Just not enough good ones to outweigh the crappy ones.

You are right, alot of people rip on N64 for not living up to it's hype. I remember being in 6th grade (back in 1992) and it was all you were hearing about how it was going to be the end all system. I was in high school (94 or 95) when it finally came out and it didn't even look as good as the Playstation. Why Nintendo was hell bent on keeping cartridge technology going I'll never know. It was a stupid idea. I never bought into the whole it makes loading times quicker. It does but you can't do a whole hell of alot with 50-100 or so Mbits, compared to the 700MBs you can put on a cd. Especially when the price of 4X cd-roms were very affordable at that time. Nintendo missed the mark by refusing to listen to repeated requests of it's customers and refusing to admit that cartridge technology was officially antique. If the Wii does fail it will be because of Nintendo's inability to listen.

It's not that I only want games with blood and guts. (Though it is a nice bonus) I want games with plots, puzzles, depth and awesome storylines, games that aren't made with children in mind.

I was just going to make a case like lukes, but was too lazy.

The ones he listed are all GREAT and ESSENTIAL playing, while more than half on your SNES list are just GOOD..

And after we remove all non-exclusives, and non-repacks of NES games, we're left with:

Not nearly as impressive when you do a fair comparison, eh? :P

Problem is you think Square games are crap and I think kids games are crap. If we paired your list down to games most adults would find appealing we'd be left with.

Super Mario 64
Excitebike 64
Mario Kart 64
Mario Party 1-3
Paper Mario
Turok
Turok 2
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Jet Force Gemini

All very decent games for sure but, it takes quite a few titles off the list. Which BTW was my one points of Nintendo dropping the ball by mostly releasing kid games.

It is however great to see that people have no problem showing love for their system, even if opinions greatly differ. :)

Define "Kid's games" Diddy Kong Racing at it's core is just Mario Kart wrapped in a family friendly story.

Banjo has plenty of jokes people of all ages can enjoy. and the gameplay is solid as well, with plenty of unlockables and treasures to find.

I notice you took Blast Corps off of my list as well, apparently someone has never played the game. that is absolutely not a kid's game. it gets hard.

DK64 is similar to Banjo, it's a massive game with loads of fun to be had if you can bring yourself to play a "kid's game". Though I fail to see your exact definition of such, due to many of the titles you axed...

I think this discussion can be mostly nullified by the fact that you removed BOTH Zelda games and Mystical Ninja from the list, because they're "kid's games"

I think that covers most of the ones you removed with no real explanation.

Yeah, don't forget Wave Race. My favourite racing game. :)

To add to the topic: I think Nintendo has a chance with the Wii.
Even with "kiddie" (???) games. Game don't need to have mature themes to apppeal to adults.
I like playing Nintendo games, although they are considered kiddie. Does that make me a kid? I guess not.
Lots of children (from the age of about 7 or 8) play "mature" games, i.e. games with lots of violence and blood in them. Does this make the kids adults? No again.
For me (I can only speak of my opinion) Nintendo makes games that both kids and adults can enjoy. I enjoyed Nintendo stuff 20 years ago and I still enjoy it now. And that's enough for me.

I would be pleased if people refrained from using the word "kiddie games". Because most of them are not. Most of them are pure, genuine fun. That's all I ask from a game.

Haha, I was going to post a bunch of games until I saw you post this! Defend N64!

Anyways, the Wii HAS what it takes but we will have to see if it all pans out. I own one and I'm playing Zelda, and its a great game! No doubt about it. I also rented Monkey Ball, and didn't take a likey to it too much (I like Monkey Ball 2 more). We'll have to see what they do with the games. I'm still waiting for someone I know to give Red Steel a review...

I've been excited to try the Wii (but funds have yet to allow me to get one) as for the 64....

Honestly the first time I ever played one was 2 1/2 years ago. I just wasn't too excited over that one. The controller is evil (after a couple hours my hand cramps up).
I must note that we only have like 6-10 games over here for it so I can't really go into if the games for it sucked overall or not. Some of them I've played were fun (DK 64, Banjo, OoT) but some were not so good (Jet Force Gemini, South Park).

BTW, does anyone know if the Wii is going to be coming out in different colours soon? I'm not too fond of anything white.

Not a good chance. I think the price point can only take the wii so far.
For Nintendo to disregard a substantial graphical boost from Gamecube to the Wii I believe was silly.

And as for the intuitive new control scheme I always point back to the power glove, which will make your arm tired way too fast.
My cousins have this 'virtual ping pong' where you have two paddles and they go to a central system and the system outputs to the tv. and you essentially play ping pong, except the ball is on the tv. I've never seen anyone ever use it.
I haven't played a multiplayer game on wii, but I would think that if you're playing multiplayer and the game is not in split screen that the perspective of your on screen character to your actual self would cause some confusion about which left is really left.

New colors will definitely pop up sooner or later. Maybe already next (fiscal) year. At first they need to concentrate on producing as many Wii units as possible and I guess it's easier with one color.
Then after some time there will be black and pink perhaps. :

You could also buy Wii skins and make your Wii "non-white". :P

How about such one? :o
