I wouldn't pay to much attention to the artwork. They have obviously ripped it from Super Mario Land but that doesn't mean the game on the cart is anything like SML. I've played a few Super Mario Bros Pirates. Most are just hacks of other games. I played one which was simply The Flinstones with Fred replaced with a Mario sprite. The cut scenes still had all the Flinstones cast!

The lost levels were (in Japan) the OFFICIAL Mario Bros. 2. I heard that Nintendo thought that U.S. audiences would find it too difficult and so eventually they took a game called Doki Doki Panic, put in Mario Sprites (made a few changes too), called it Super Mario Bros. 2, and released it in America as the sequel to the original SMB instead of giving American the true SMB2 (aka the Lost Levels).

this pirate game is most likely a armadillo hack with mario its a totally awesome game. but theres a chance its not i have a bunch of the pirate carts but numbers always differ. i have a mario 4 but its actually mario 3. but i have a mario 6 its a hack of tinytoons with mario. theres also mario 16 which is a really good hack of joe and mac with mario. really good game!!! you should give any a try when the chance comes around :D

Also, I think they were slightly bothered by the fact that it was basically just Super Mario Bros all over again with harder levels. At about the same time, a lil' Japanese company named Fuji TV released a Famicom Disk System game known as Doki Doki Panic. Nintendo bought all the rights, did a quick hack job on the main characters and released it in the west as Super Mario Bros 2. and as Super Mario Bros. USA in Japan.

Thinking about it, I feel sure I'd seen details of this someplace looks like you're right galaxy warrior, it does seem like it's probably an armadillo hack.
