Do any of the emulators playthe ROMS while they are still a zip file, or will I need to unzip them?
I'm...uh...writing a research paper because it is illegal to play ROMS. No, wait I'm only playing the ones I already own.....yeah that's it.
1.1 gigs of compressed files should fit into 4.7 gigs of space anyway, right?
I'm thinking of making an emulator box out of the computer parts I have laying around. I think there's a 1.3 Ghz processor a DVD-ROM drive and a 6 gig or so hard drive. (The hard drive only needs to be big enough to hold the emulators and any save games.) With a simple video out card it would play on a regular TV. A couple spare controllers and a soldering iron and I could have a "gamebox".

All of the emulators I've played have to have an unzipped file to play, with the exception of MAME.

I thought so, but thought it was worth a try.
Do any of the emulators run off of Linux? I have never tried it yet, but a lot of the hacker sites seem to love the whole "open code" thing. Being a car geek it's kind of weird to see Megasquirt EFI on a hacker site.

very nearly ALL emuators for ANYTHING can play from a standard zip file. As for the video-out card, Save yourself some money, and grab one of THESE, A friend and I discovered those due to curiosity regarding an Emulator/Media PC. I haven't tested it personally, but if it works, it'll be great.

The video out cards I was looking are something like these: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1043623&sku=c460-8006&CMP=ILC-FOT02I think it would work great for an emulator machine.

Tiger Direct: BAD Pricewatch: GOOD I've had issues with Tiger Direct in the past, most especially on fulfilling promises of rebates. Pricewatch is twice as nice. I strongly suggest the video out thing that NES-Luke suggested. Also, I got a spare Video card that should fulfill most 2D emulation, but you'd need an adapter. PM me if interested... My List. Remember, everything can be bought, for a price.

I'm off to google LINUX+nes+emulator and see what I come up with.
I'll post my results here eventually.

FCE Ultra v0.93 (Windows) (HP) FCE Ultra v0.74 (Linux) FCE Ultra v0.74 (DOS) FCE Ultra is a very nice NES emulator, what makes it special is its excellent Linux port
and then this:
What is TuxNES? TuxNES is an emulator for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. Currently, the emulator has been tested on Linux, FreeBSD, and NetBSD, all running on i386 processors. For a full list of capabilities, please visit the features page. TuxNES is based on Nestra, a great public-domain NES emulator by Quor.
It sounds like I have plenty of options for my gamebox, without having to upgrade the windows 98 I think is on there right now.
