This is just an fyi for everyone, in case you are confused, I changed my name on the forums from "vincent vega" to "the jake o project" I'm trying to clean up my usernames on various forums, about half had vincent vega and the other half had the jake o project.

what does "cracked" stand for? I downloaded some GBA roms and half have "cracked" in the name.

Cracked usually means that someone altered the rom or rom header. A cracked rom may play like the normal one but can freeze or glitch at any time. Reccomend not playing cracked roms because of their unexpected ways. Where did you download the roms from??

Cracked are often modified so that they'll run on certain flash cards, which don't support all the features of the kind of cart that the official release was supplied on, or are modified to provide extra features, like invincibility. A good example would be Castlevania III. It wouldn't run properly under Nesticle (one the predominant NES emulator), because Nesticle didn't support its' mapper. There are various versions floating around hacked to use a different mapper that Nesticle DID support (though, I've yet to see one which does a perfect job).

I didn't notice this post earlier... http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/gtguide.htmThis has a few more abbreviations. And (-) means "unknown date" not "unknown country" For HES -- http://www.zophar.net/hes/It's a type of video game music file. Edit: HES is also the name of a video game company, so that might be what it means too. Seems that they made their own type of cartridge. So that's probably what the (HES) means

About HES: Quote:It's a type of video game music file. But that has nothing to do with the "(HES)" code in NES games. As I found out now, HES (Home Entertainment Suppliers) is a company that brought out games for some consoles, including the NES. So, the code names the company, as it it also done for example in "Pac-Man" ROMs.

And I repeated myself really badly in my edit. Ugh. I hate it when I do that.

What does the symbol "[U]" mean? And no, I don't mean the country code "(U)" for USA. I mean "[U]" in square brackets, like in "Low G Man (U) [U][!]". Does anybody know what it means?

I actually came across this post by accident while searching Cowering's forums. http://www.allgoodthings.us/mambo/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&Itemid=42&func=view&id=755&catid=6Cowering sez: "The Low G Man is a UNIF format dump, I've been told the norman ines dump is 'wrong' somehow, and until i redump it myself, I won't know for sure." A quick googling for "UNIF rom" leads me to this website. http://www.parodius.com/~veilleux/index.html So... it's a new type of ROM format that they're using for NES games.
