I think i found a nes prototype, i found it with a bundle of 10 nes games at moving out garage sale, when i brought the games home one of them looked kinda like those nes prototypes games on nes world.

the sad thing is that it won't work on my Yobo fc game system and my nes. All my other nes games work perfectly on the two.
So its broken. When i went back to the garage sale, they already moved out.

so heres some pic of the prototype , on the label it says " Wayne Gretzky Hockey".

Do you think it would be possible that the label got tottaly ripped off, and someone just put on a clear label and wrote that on? Probably not, Good find.

That was not a proto, i read somewhere you put it in your nes, and it makes sure the sounds and everything is working right and tests the colour of the system. I think

A prototype cart will have an opening on the front to access the EPROM chip. This allowed the programmers to upload the newest build of the game for testing. Also, I doubt a proto cart would have the caution label on the back.

Is that black rectangle on the front an opening? Is it a plastic cover for an opening? Or is is just a sticker or something?

the only way you'll know for sure is if you open the cart and look at the game board.

Bust out the Grinder!!!!!!! i wouldnt bother buying on of those gamebits unless i had a gyromite cart or something that had a NES/FC converter. I wonder why a proto would be at a yardsale.

Still, Dead or not, there's potentially interesting data on those chips. Open it up, take a look at the chips and you might try transplanting them across to another board of roughly the same kind, and you might just be able to play it and have it dumped so the whole world could take a look.

Not that I, personally, would be all that interested in a proto of Wayne Gretzky, but there'd probably be _someone_ out there who would.

you need to give us info on the black rectangle.. what is it? is it a hole in the cart? or a sticker? or what?

just because a cart doesnt work, doesnt mean it's broken, i have twenty one nes cartridges on my shelf, all of which came to me 'broken'.. out of twenty two carts, i fixed twenty one..

if you believe this is a real proto, you can send it over to me and ill do my best.. i have ebay feedback under the same name, phreak97, if you want to check that out.

only drawback is im in australia.. still, a nes cart shouldnt cost more than about $10 both ways. i can also most likely tell you if it truely is a proto.. i have the required tools to open it, clean it, and repair any damage inside. i cannot do anything about it if the rom is corrupt, and i do not guarentee a fix.

if it's a real proto, itll be worth it to you.

also, i wont charge anything for now, you just pay shipping. if i get other people wanting me to do it, i might put $1 on it or something..

However, programmers MAY be able to do something with the data, corrupt & incomplete or not.

The fact that it doesn't work supports the theory of it being a proto. Usually protos are flashed using cheap EEPROMs, they tend to wear out after so long.

sorry for the bad qualities of my photo, but i think the black rectangle is some kind of electrical tape.

If it's not an opening, or a cover for an opening, then chances are slim to none that it's a proto. Oh well, if it isn't, just pretend it is. The sense of "value" of a proto, or any cart for that matter, is pretty psycological anyway. The actual components and material that make up a cart are worth only pennies!

So if you believe it's a proto, then it's just as valuable to you as any other proto.

I wouldn't rule it out just because it's not hacked to death. I seem to remember seeing a fair number of claimed protos online without holes cut into them.

Yeah, that seems plausible. I mean, it only takes a second to unscrew a cart and open it up, so it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to do it.

I guess the only way to find out for sure is to get a ROM dump and compare it to a final build of the game.
