There was a post about 8-Eyes and CastleVania in another thread. This made me think, what game clones can you think of that directly ripped off another game. The one that comes immediately to my mind is:

Whomp 'Em = Mega Man

Have any others?

Even bigger and worse Mega Man rip-off = The Krion Conquest.

There's a couple of games on the TurboGrafx-16 called Neutopia, which is the most blatant rip-off of 'The Legend of Zelda' I've ever seen (it even has bombs that you can use break through walls and room-to-room dungeons).

In fact it's so much like the original 'Zelda' that it's actually really good! But a "rip-off" none the less.

Also 'Code Name: Viper' by Capcom rips off 'Rolling Thunder' hard (although no where near as "hard" in the game play department)
.

Mega Man rip offs, I must play them immediatly! as for what I know of that are rip-offs... well, most everything on the lesser known consoles is a rip off of larger franchises. I can't think of any specific examples off the top of my head though.

OK, I've now played both of the claimed clones.

Whomp Em I had a hard time feeling Mega Man, although it was a good game, it's not Mega Man. I can see where the similarities would come from. but in conclusion. Not a rip-off.

The Krion Conquest, on the other hand... feels very much like Mega Man. it also seems to be a decent quality game so far. a few different features, such as playing as what seems to be a wizard, games takes place in 1999 rather than 20XX, the ability to shoot upward, and starting off with different elemental attacks. my verdict on this one: rip-off

both are fun games though. and if you're fan of Mega Man, you'll probably like them.

Yeah, this is the reason I like forums. The Krion Conquest was actually the game I was thinking of... I have no idea how Whomp 'Em got inside my head!

heh, it's a good thing, I like Whomp Em now, I wouldn't likely have found it if it weren't for that mistake :P and it does play a little like Mega Man.

That comparison has been made in the past, I think I'll have to check that game out.

Yes, even the final boss is similar, but with a cool twist!

For the curious, here ya go
Neutopia
Neutopia II

Also, when I saw the title of the thread, The Krion Conquest was the first game in my head, but you guys had beat me to it already. It's a pretty blatant Megaman ripoff. Not a bad game, though. Tough as hell, that's for sure.

Ninja Gaiden - Blue Shadow

there are a number of differences, and one may not play as smoothly as the other, but they are certainly similar.

I hadn't heard of it either, then I was playing with my NESterDC disc, and I found it. it's pretty cool from what I played.

Blue Shadow seems to be the PAL version of Shadow of the Ninja. I don't think that Shadow of the Ninja is too much of a clone of Ninja GaiDen. A more close comparison to Ninja GaiDen would be Ninja Crusaders, though it's not too blatant about it. The biggest thing I noticed is how the enemies are generated over and over again. Ninja GaiDen syndrome! Another similarity is in the way the character is. It's still a decent game...

The character is controlled and looks almost the exact same. Even with the shield and everything. You don't see the HUGE similarities?

They are very similar, but also different in many points.
Also the difficulty level in Battle of Olympus is higher than in Zelda when I remember right.
And for me personal, Zelda 2 let me feel a better, more fascinating athmosphere. I like BoO too, though.

May 16th...

They definitely have their differences, but I just think that Battle of Olympus is heavily influenced by Zelda II. Obviously Nintendo didn't feel it was a complete rip off because they licenced it.
