Okay, after all these months I finally tried out the demo that I got in the mail. I must say (judging by the demo) that I don't like this game. It seems a bit too boring or bland or something. See, the thing I liked about the DW's from the NES was that there was always something new from one game to the next, keeping the series fresh. I haven't played 5-7 at all though. This installment seems like an RPG that doesn't really offer too much in the terms of ... well... freshness. I don't like the way the characters look at all, and what's up with the "cute" little animal in your pocket?!? Anyway, it doesn't really seem like something I'll be able to get into. Sorry Star-Tropics. http://robertlbryant.com

From what I've seen, it seems to be going for an older-school gaming style, rather than something to wow the masses... "Roth" wrote:...look at all, and what's up with the "cute" little animal in your pocket?! It's a prerequisite for ANYTHING even remotely like anime to have a "cute", irritating animal and/or robot and/or child in it.

I don't know how anyone can consider that game boring, but to each their own. Dragon Quest VIII stays true to its roots while going through a huge graphical overhaul. The cute little animal is a "hamster". Support the Dragon Quest series!Werewolf) Dragon Quest IX!

Hey! Try it out for yourself. It's emphasis was largely on being a solid title dedicated to series fans, so it still deserves a chance.

I finally checked out the demo disc last night as well, and I agree with Roth. Though I didn't play it for a long time, I really didn't see anything all too exciting to draw me in.

Already beat it, and here's the quick review. Great game, but you'll wish it would just end. Seriously though, it's a fantastic RPG for PS2; up there with FFX-2 (my favorite). Definately worth it when it drops price. As for the demo, I believe that covers up to the first boss fight in a cave? But I wouldn't say that I was completely drawn in at that point, just wait for the story to roll a little i think. I put something like just under 70 hours in. Which is probably a lot because I did several side things and wasted time and gold.

All of the German gaming magazines said that, too, but the game was the highest rated RPG on the PS2 in almost all of these magazines. I will definitely buy that game. And I'll buy a PS2 especially for that game. From what I've read and seen it's exactly what I want. An old-school RPG with funny round-based fights, no weird new battle systems you have to take a university course to understand them. E.g. FF XII... the videos of the battles I saw until now were horrible. :?
