Usually HDD sizes go UP with the time. But Sony doesn't bother.
I'd be ok with 40GB, too, but what I don't understand is why the new model won't have backwards compatibility. I mean, it's only software, right? How would it hurt them to insert the software?
And with the time people might get confused with all the different versions of hardware around. :?
If I buy one I'll get a Japanese one with BC.

They claim removing it was a way of keeping costs down. Also, as 65 new games were coming out it's not needed (or some words to that effect) they've been criticised on Kotaku and the sort for being hypocritical over it, as Sony said before it was important to them.
Even so, i'm strongly considering getting this model. It'll suit me well, I already have a PS2 although it needs a controller, memory card etc.

That white PS3 looks nice, but somehow I wanted PS2 compatibility AND card slots, which both are gone with this System. My god, Sony. I'd buy your stuff in Japan, but you make it so hard for me. Now you're at an acceptable price (39980Yen), have the colour I like, but the features don't look too lovely to me. :?

If I buy one I'll get a Japanese one with BC. You can just replace the hard drive with any off-the-shelf 2.5" SATA drive. Apparently the back compatibility was still using the graphics chip from the PS2, and the CPU was being emulated on the PAL machines, and the North American 80GB. The new model has ALL PS2 hardware removed. Glad I got my 60 when I did.

I was concerned about the new PS3 had no card slots, but now I read on an amazon (Japan) customer's review that you can plug in any USB stick and load data from there. That would save me from buying Sony Memory Sticks. Is that true?
If so, I might get a white 40GB model around next year's Christmas or so. I don't know why, but I love white consoles. :)
As I don't plan on selling my PS2 I also don't REALLY need the backwards compatibility.

Looks like the 40GB is official for North America, and the price is actually semi-accurate between Canada and the US, if my understanding of the press release is correct. :) Also, the 80GB is dropping to $499 in both the US and Canada, again, accurate pricing pleases me. http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/10/18/40gb-ps3-confirmed-for-the-us/

I heard a rumour that all PS3's (even if they can't play PS2 games) can play original PS games, does anybody know if this is true?
