Are there any fans of the original Dragon Warrior game for NES? My dad got it for me when I was about 10 and it's probably the reason I still love RPG's to this day. The simplicity of the game was great, and I found the extra features in the sequels to be too much baggage. DW is still one of my top games of all time.

It was the first Dragon Warrior I played and I enjoyed it, although the leveling started to drag near the end. I am nearing the end of of Dragon Warrior IV at the moment and I don't think there has been any point where I was walking around in circles for hours just to level up. I guess it's because there are much greater areas to explore so the leveling happens naturally as you go. Looking back at the first game I don't think there was anything that would make me want to play through it again.

I beat it when I had a ton of NES roms on Nesticle. It was a great game. When I was a kid I never could figure out how to play it. I was 8 dammit.

I loved the fact that the letters in your name changed your stats... I did the math way back when, and I think that the name with the best stats was Z'Tu. I used it to beat the game at level 16, if I recall.

Now, that is interesting. I want to look into that :D I like DW1 despite the fact that the tevels take 5 minutes, and the leveling takes 5 hours :\

I didn't find the leveling THAT bad. Keep in mind that the max level cap is relatively low (30? I don't recall exactly). It compares well to that of Super Mario RPG in a sense.

Yeah, there's a name/stat chart on gamefaqs if you want to check that out.

I beat it on level 20, but got to the final boss on level 15. I soon realised I was severely underpowered so that's when I had to walk around in circles for hours.

I love how they make you think you're wrecking the boss in the game, it's a great surprise and it's warranted as the initial situation is too easy.

Yeah, it was a neat boss fight. Never really had any trouble with it, though, even when I wasn't being the godlike Z'Tu. Now, DW II's final boss fights... Damn, those guys wrecked me. Really, I liked the overall size of the original, rather than the second one's larger world. With the second one, it didn't feel like an expansive world just waiting to be explored, like the first one did. It just felt like... Well, like it dragged on forever. There really wasn't a clearly defined goal, just "Get Hargon". The entire game just felt like you were ponderously making your way from town to town. With the first one, it felt like a world. Which is wierd, since the second one's world was much larger and more diverse... Maybe since I completed the first DW completely out of order... I still remember the first time I found the golem city. I just stumbled onto it, and he thrashed me. I put 2 and 2 together, and went over every square of the northeastern village... Once I found it, I was jazzed as hell. I liked how saving the princess wasn't the final goal. It was almost a side quest. In fact, it was the first major goal I completed. I was so proud that I walked the princess back to the castle, rather than teleported. (It was a while back, when I played games in a fashion relating to the feel of the game. I was a wierd kid.) By the way, for those of you who played and loved the Dragon Warrior games, I really would suggest getting Dragon Warrior Monsters. I know, it sounds gay, but it's a really creative, genuinely good game (think of it this way: it was a knockoff of pokemon, no matter how you look at it. However, Pokemon itself stole every single one of DWM's ideas, a different one stolen in each incarnation. DWM was that inventive.) Also, it is most definitely set in the world of Dragon Warrior. If you loved the series, you sould play it, and see if you recognize anything...

Don't think I've ever tried DWM, but I think I'll check that out in the near future. As for the first game, I end up throwing that game in to play it alot. It's been a while since I actually have though. It's one of those games where I like to buy a 12-pack and just start going (now that I think about it, that's most games). I think I just enjoy the simplicity when I don't feel like thinking too hard. It also had those little things that I enjoyed in it, one of those being what Uber Newb mentioned. Carrying the princess back, and it wasn't the end of the game. Back then I thought that was one of the coolest things ever... hell, I think it's pretty cool now! Also, I think you hit the nail on the head about the world in DW, it seems so big though it's not really... you do actually stumble onto things when you play, even if you know ~where something is, you still accidentally find it sometimes. I've started games on both DWII and DWIII (don't have four :( ), and while I like those games, the original still has it's place in my heart as the first RPG that I went through in it's entirety, followed by Ultima: Exodus. I love the first game :) http://robertlbryant.com

I liked the feel of the overall world as well. The enemy levels were distinct in real areas, specifically when crossing bridges. I'm pretty sure you can beat the game without rescuing the princess, but I've never tried it. One of my favourite places is where you fight the first Axe Knight, man does he ever give you a beating the first time. I didn't like having multiple party members in the sequels, to me the game was always simple and good just the way it started. And I love how Dragon Warrior VIII still has slimes in it, lol.

Actually, I just bought this game and was very eager to finally play it. But....it doesn't work. I'm not sure if it's the game or my Yobo, but what the hell?!?!
All of my other games work fine on the Yobo, but I was warned that some might not. The cart is super clean, and I can't see why it wouldn't play on it's own. Oh well...bummer.

I'd suggest tossing the Yobo in the trash and getting a real NES. Hell, anywhere local to me that carries the Yobo wants like, $60 for it, I could get a real top loader for that much.

Well, I paid less than $20 for the Yobo, and so far it's done well. I don't exactly have enough extra cash to drop $50+ for a real NES on eBay right now, so I'm kinda screwed for the time being.
As for getting a REAL top loader for $60, that would be SWEET!
