very careful about breeding. You need to be calculated about it, and make sure to document the process. Things get very confusing later on... the amount of monsters is astronomical. The breeding is addicting, as each parent will "hand down" their skills to future generations, skills that the monster normally may not have had...
Gah, I want to just drone on and on about it. I've never quite worked up the nerve to restart it, since my game was completely erased once I was pretty damn far into the game... I had a seventh-generation uber-l337 monster, too... But talking about it has got my blood up...
Make sure you visit the library a lot, and note what monster combos you have and don't have, and what combos produce what monsters.
EDIT Oh! And don't use meat on bosses. Either they'll join you, or they won't. The game doesn't tell you this until later on, right after I had used a hell of a lot on a boss you don't get... Sufficient to say I was pissed.
There is
one boss that can be convinced with a specific amount of specific types of meat, but it's a damn hard fight.
