Yes, they were developing it for the NES, and there were a few prototype cartdiges.

I would say that's not an actual prototype, just based on the cartridge. Of course, you'll want a second opinion. But what OGTL says is true.

I have the japanese GBA cart with Mother 1+2 on it.
The first one is neat, but part 2 is far better. That's just my opinion, though.

I don't know whether this is a prototype or not...
OMG, what makes you think that's it's not a prototype?

The boys over at the starmen.net forums are crying "rom dump". Also, you'll notice it's a Buy It Now auction and no one has bought it yet. Earthbound sells for that much in perfect condition with the player's guide, certainly a fan would buy the original Earthbound Zero proto for that price at the drop of a hat.

And, since it's all opened, and there is nothing covering the little "windows" on the ROM chips, you can expect game corruption now. the whole purpose of those windows is to allow the ROMs to be erased easily using a UV light.

Just in the way the cart looks. It looks like someone just peeled the sticker of whatever game used to be on the old case, and dumped the rom. I'm always really skeptical of 'prototypes'.
