Alright, I just downloaded MAME the other day (I should note immediately that it's version 32 0.90u1), and roughly 75% of the games I try to get for it do not work (Darkstalker's Revenge, Pyros, Food Fight, to name just a few), is it the emulator's fault, the ROM's, or this retard user? I do the "game properties" trick and it says required files are missing.

Ah, the joys of MAME...

Each version of MAME requires a new ROM set. it's retarded, and the very reason I never run MAME. Generally sites that offer up MAME ROMs make note of which version the set is, try grabbing the version of MAME that corresponds to that set.

Alright, I just hope there's not too many versions. Thanks!

So, Luke, do you use any other arcade emulators?

I ran Raine for a while, but I generally just mess with console emulators.

Well, there's quite a few that are working that I'm satisfied with for now (Tutankham, I've been trying to find that in arcade format for YEARS, and Poker Ladies has given me a reason to live).
Unfortunately, every Darkstalkers ROM I've found, to cop Luke's phrase, is useless and broken.

Hey, does anyone have a link to a MAME version with configurable controls? I've reinstalled it three damn times now, and none of them let me use joystick or keyboard controls.

Yeah..RomNation.net, and it's the version I'm using. It comes with default keyboard settings, but you can map them out yourself, too.
But, as I mentioned, there's quite a few games it won't run. And frame skip is a must if you've got a tard computer like mine.

Right... that's the one. I've never had a problem with slowdown or anything, but I did use to have problems with my laptop spazzing every once in a while.

Yeah, it's just my slow computer. Everyone sounds like they're in an echo chamber if it's a game with speech, unless I speed it up, and I played Battle Toads on it yesterday, and the pigs being thrown toward me on the screen in slow motion was positively spooky **shudders**.

I never have a had a problem running games with mame, but i haven't really tried any of the games mentioned before.

I believe the newest version of mame runs radiant silvergun, so that's something, although i hear it doesn't run all that well.

One thing ot make sure you do is to get the original version of the game that you want to run. Like if you try to load a game and it says you're missing a certain file or file set you most likely need the previous version of the game or a bios file for that game.

As for configuring controls, the way i usually do it is to load the game first. then once it begins to run press tab. this will bring up a menu. you can change mame controls for all games or just that games controls...with that said i'm sure there's a way to do it without loading mame, however, i don't do it that way.

Well, I found another version that isn't so finicky-v81b. It runs what I want, albiet slowly, but that might be my computer. All those Darkstalkers games I wanted run on it, as well as a few others I wanted :D .
Oh, my god. I just saw Luke's new pet rat avatar and nearly fudged my didies!
