I'm bored, so I'll do a poll.
When Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis were both out and top dogs, which system excelled in graphics?
IMO, I always though SNES beat the crap out of Genesis in the graphics department. I remember when Mortal Kombat II came out. It looked great on SNES and horrible on Genesis (It was like Night and Day).

I think the game selection for the SNES was also far superior. Plus better controllers. Playing Super Street Fighter II on Genesis without a 6-button was an absolute pain.

Well, the SNES could display 256 colours on screen at a time, the Genesis could only do 64. But as for the controllers, I much prefer the Genesis 6 button to the SNES controller, it has a more arcadey button layout. EDIT: I guess I should have specified that I prefer the Genesis controller for games like Street Fighter.

For me, it's always been the SNES. When I was younger (and those two were top dogs) I was never into to the genesis/megadrive, but I did like Alex Kidd (what happened to that series?) and Sonic. Now i'm older I like the megadrive more than I used to, but still prefer the SNES. I also prefer its controller.

When I was in that time, I only owned a Genesis. I always enjoyed playing the SNES at my friends house (gotta love SMW!!!). So obviously I have to say Genesis... But had it been different growing, up I would probably like the SNES more.

Graphics wise the SNES was better than the Genesis, no question.

I'm pretty closed minded, and that's why I laugh any time sombody tries to come up with an argument for Genesis being better than the SNES. The 6 button controller is a better setup for fighters, but that's because it ended up, as luke said, having a layout similar to the arcade controls. But for any other game I would take my good old snes controller with it's soft shoulder buttons and elegant four button layout..I mean basically that controller style on modern systems.

Little known fact: the SNES did have a 6-button Arcade Stick (not the Super Advantage)for arcade fighters. It was released by Capcom and works with the Street fighter games quite sweetly. check it out: SNES, no question had better graphics than genesis. Take Dante's previous example: my favorite arcade title "Mortal Kombat II". The most dramatic difference is in the "Select your fighter" screen Ahhhhh.... Arcade godliness. I purchased the Genesis port MKII in 1997 right after playing the arcade title, and I stood in shock at this port. The graphics were so frickin drab. Seriously the characters look drawn, rather than filmed. And Wha-hah? The font they used for the entire game was the MK1 font!!! *shudder* not to mention a displeasing lemon-yellow MK1 font. The 32X later Corrected this mistake, but thats wayyy of topic Clearly this screen is better they have an impressive color pallete, but the characters are slightly fuzzier than the genesis version. dont worry, its no big deal. Who's clearly the winner on the Gfx end? SNES. but graphics, sometimes, arent everything.

Quote:but graphics, sometimes, arent everything. Totally, that's why I'm a huge fan of SNES over Genesis. I think the SNES has the best balance of games, gameplay, and graphics. It has a huge library, fun games in nearly every genre, and good enough graphics to not make you guess at what the powerup icon really is. You know what want to see make a comeback? The headphone port and the volume control for it on the console, I always laugh when I see. Always. I guess Sega got something right on that system..until they got rid of it on the later models.

I think the game library is even more important than the graphics point. SNES got the better RPG selection, Zelda, Donkey Kong Country, of course Mario but SEGA got Sonic, Super Metroid, and tons of other stuff. Even just talking RPGs, SNES got the SoulBlazer Series, Lufia, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, and lots of other favourites. I'm sure Genesis got some good ones, but not the majority of the stuff that's become popular in recent years.

I actually don't have Super Metriod yet, though it is nifty. I found it at the local store on the weekend but it was $30 CAD.
