Well, it seems these folks have gotten a bootable kernel on the DS hardware now, they seem to be progressing quite nicely! http://www.dslinux.org/

Weird you should mention it, because I had generally given up on the DS homebrew scene for several months until today, when I started checking stuff out again. What really interests me is the WiFiMe, the wireless Pass-through loophole that was discovered about a month ago. You can get a compatible WiFi card for about $25 and start sending homebrew to your DS through the software download feature. And what's this about a possible NDS flash card already? (Neoflash I think they're calling it.) Things are really looking up in the DS scene. I'm just waiting to see "NiFi cracked!"...I want my DS online and I want it online now.

Somehow I can't access the site. Perhaps I'll have to try it later again. :(
Cool idea to have other things than games on the DS.

It's not a new idea by ANY means, man. Video game systems have been hacked as long as they've been around, and Linux gurus have Linux shells running on everything from XBox to iPod.
